Everything You Must Know About Septic Tank Maintenance

Septic tanks are very useful in rural areas where there are no sewerage systems. They treat a property’s waste to avoid polluting the environment, but a lot of people are not aware of their proper maintenance tricks. Knowing how to maintain a septic tank is ideal to avoid losing money on repairs and health difficulties.

When you have a septic tank, you must make sure that your washing machine has a filter which blocks lint from flowing into the septic tank and blocking the soil in the drain fields. When drain fields are clogged with non-biodegradable substances like polyester and nylon which are found in clothing, they prevent efficient water disposal through the soil beds of your drain field. They are challenging to remove and can cause your septic tank to fail.

Your septic tank has a particular volume it can support comfortably. When you release more water into it that it can hold, it can overflow. Overflown septic tanks are very hazardous as they emit a terrible odor and fecal matter into the environment, raising serious health concerns among residents. Have a proper water management system in your property to allow your septic tank enough time to process waste. Do not do all your washing in one day as the water released into the septic tank can be overwhelming to your tank, but wash your clothes in small bits across the week. Again, harvest all rainwater into different areas other than your septic tank.

You should install effluent filters in the exit baffle of your septic tank to prevent solids from leaving the tank. This makes your sewer utility efficient and safe to use. These filters should be washed every time you pump your tank to keep them efficient. The tank should be cleaned at least once a year or three years maximum depending on the number of persons utilizing a property. Your septic tank should be inspected through its manhole to evaluate whether its exit baffle is intact and whether the tank has cracks or leaks.

Avoid using cleaning agents in your home excessively as they adversely affect the bacteria responsible for breaking down the waste in your tank. Provide your septic tank with a lot of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from time to time to replace the dead and weak bacteria. Remember, powdered detergents have plastic fillers that block your lines and drain field, while oils, solvents, paint thinners, disinfectants, poisons, and pesticides distort the treatment process.

Finally, don’t build any structures on top of your drain field or drive on it or compact its soil in any way or plant trees and shrubs close to your septic tank as they clog the drain lines. Only grass can grow there without any interference.
